T-Mobile to debut unlimited mobile-to-mobile plan next month?

T-Mobile to debut unlimited mobile-to-mobile plan April 4?

Here’s a juicy little rumor that’s sure to excite the T-Mobile faithful. Retail training materials, acquired by TmoNews, indicate that the nation’s fourth largest wireless provider may launch an “Unlimited Any Mobile” add-on early next month. The feature can be tacked on to existing T-Mo plans (with some exceptions) for a paltry $10 a month. Once added, you’re free to call any US mobile without having to think about minutes, and there’s no contractual commitments to the package. Sprint patrons have enjoyed this luxury for quite some time, and AT&T users can get the same, with the adoption of an unlimited text messaging plan. If this does materialize, maybe it’ll help woo some of those customers back.

Next-Gen iPhone May Not Get New A5X Chip – Report – Social Barrel

The A5X chip powering the latest and greatest tablet from Apple may not find its way to the next-generation iPhone in the future, a new report suggests.

After Apple on Wednesday unveiled the iPad 3 powered by the improved and more powerful A5X, many were wondering if the new chip from Apple will incorporate the processor to the next iPhone.

However, a report from Macworld says that analysts are on the opinion that the A5X is not headed to the next iPhone.

The report cites the A4 and the A5 chips which found their way to the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S after they first debuted on the original iPad and the iPad 2.

However, Macworld says that analysts are saying that the A5X may have been tailored for use on tablets only.

The A5X is more powerful than the A5 but it also is assumed to consume more power than its predecessor making it a bad fit for the iPhone which has a smaller battery than the iPad 3.

T-Mobile CMO: subsidized pricing hurts wireless competition, undermines hardware value

Could an end to unsubsidized smartphones be on its way for US carriers? If T-Mobile’s Chief Marketing Officer Cole Brodman had his way, that familiar on-contract pricing would’ve gone the way of the Dodo a long time ago. Speaking at this week’s GeekWire Summit in Seattle, the Magenta exec vented his frustrations with the industry’s current business model, citing his belief that low cost handsets not only distort consumers’ perspectives, effectively “[devaluing].. the hardware they are using,” but also position wireless market players to compete unevenly. When pressed as to why his own network hadn’t effected the change, Brodman referenced the lack of cooperation from other major operators, in addition to a market driven by subscribers’ purchase habits. As for the fourth place network’s glaring iPhone omission, Brodman seemed nonplussed, highlighting the variety of Android and Windows Phones available on its lineup, while asserting his faith in a multi-OS marketplace. While you keep those toes crossed in the hopes of a subsidy-free mobile future, check out the source below for the full panel interview.

Nike To Open First-Ever API To Developers At Backplane’s SXSW Music Hackathon

Last month, Jason wrote about the announcement that Backplane — the new interactive, visual platform that’s part Pinterest, part Tumblr and Ning — will be using its star power to stage an unusual event at SXSW: A music hackathon.

The startup, which is backed by Lady Gaga along with a host of Silicon Valley VCs, is hosting its so called “SXSW Managers Hack,” a unique event for SXSW and music tech. The hackathon will be judged by music industry veterans, like Scooter Braun (the guy who helped bring you The Bieber), President of Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Jay Brown, and Lady Gaga’s manager (and Backplane Co-founder) Troy Carter, as well as reps from Spotify, Pandora, and SoundHound.

In addition, it seems that hackers will also be able to pair some fitness functionality to their music-related hacks during the event, as we’ve learned that Backplane has enlisted a somewhat unusual name when it comes to hacking: Nike.

Yes, we’ve learned that Nike will be joining the Managers Hack to open up a beta version of the NikeFuel API for the first time to developers interested in combining music with its FuelBand.

For a bit of background, Nike recently released its Jawbone and Fitbit competitor, the Nike FuelBand, which is a lightweight, LED-lit bracelet that uses so-called “NikeFuel” metrics to record biomedical data to your smartphone. In other words, it uses a three-axis accelerometer to measure all your sports-related exercises, syncing that data with an iPhone app so that you can set goals and track exercise while on the go.

This represents the first time that Nike has released an API of any kind, and naturally the first time it’s made its NikeFuel platform available to developers. So now, developers will be able to hack together apps, platforms, and technologies that can “advance the future of digital music distribution,” as Backplane puts it, while adding some cool Nike-backed fitness functionality to boot.

What’s more, this is exciting for developers, because they will be being judged by the people who have their fingers on the button that decide which apps and platforms artists actually use.

The event kicks off tomorrow, Sunday, March 11, and runs from 2-10 p.m., with winners to be chosen at the end of the event. The event will be livestreamed by R to Z Studios, Randi Zuckerberg’s new social media firm. (Zuckerberg will be hosting the stream.) Readers can check it out here.

Backplane will also be broadcasting from Austin into Times Square via the NASDAQ screens.

For more on the event, check it out here. You can also learn more about Path’s new API and recent integration with Nike’s fitness platform here.

No New Custom 4G iPhone For OZ This Year – SmartHouse

The Company who last week announced a new 4G iPad that won’t operate on the new Telstra 4G LTE network is believed to be reluctant to develop a custom version of their popular iPhone for Australia because the current Telstra 4G LTE network is not available to the majority of the Australian population a Telstra source has told SmartHouse.

Consumers in Australia who buy the new iPad won’t be able to make use of Telstra’s fast 4G mobile network for the time being with Apple set to have to change their marketing material and packaging to suite the Australian market.

The next iPhone like the new 4G iPad will operate on the 700MHz and 2100MHz spectrum which is different from the 1800MHz frequency currently used by Telstra who is expected to move to the same spectrum in 2014-2015.

This week Samsung is set to reveal their new 4G Galaxy S 3 and a 4G Galaxy Note which will run on the Telstra 4G LTE network. Earlier this month the Korean Company launched a new Samsung Galaxy 8.9″ Tablet.

What Apple iPad and iPhone owners will be able to take advantage off is the high end 3G high speed packet access (HSPA) plus technology that operates on the 850MHz and 2100MHz spectrum. This technology in independent tests by SmartHouse appears to be as fast if not faster than some of the US 4G networks.

After Apple eliminated a version number with the release of their “new iPad” speculation is mounting that the new iPhone which is due in August or September in Australia will simply be called the  “new iPhone”.

The new iPhone is tipped to be announced at Apple‘s Worldwide Developers Conferences in June and will most likely to be running on iOS6 which we would expect to see at Apple‘s WWDC in June along with the new phone.
